Google Allo App Review

Google Allo –
Well with the success of Whatsapp, iMessage and FB messenger, it really was a matter of time before Google launched their own messaging app. Some people may know that Google’s past efforts with Hangout their other messaging app, failed to make any sort of impression on the market. Allo is Google having another go at this elusive industry.

Why is Google launching Google Allo when they already have Hangout?

Now what’s hard about entering this market is that it really doesn’t matter if someone installs your app, what matters is that all their friends install it too. And to get everyone to change from their most comfortable messaging app, where they already have all their groups and friends isn’t that easy.

With Hangout, they probably learnt their lesson that people aren’t really going to change the way they message for some cool stickers and emoji icons, so this time they have tried to add something extra.

They’ve added Google’s intelligent assistant that you can chat with and ask questions. This assistant also gives you suggestions on how to reply to your friends, pretty crazy if you ask me, and I guess that’s why people are calling it a “smart app”.

Google’s Intelligent Assistance

Now a lot like any voice recognitions or artificial intelligence based software, it gets better the more you use it, as it keeps learning and developing.

Though at first this sounds like the making of a new terminator movie, it’s actually pretty handy and can tell you who won the game, or what the weather is going to be like.

“Smart” Invites

Another trick that Google has up its sleeve is that you can invite people who are using android phones directly through the Android system and the invite will appear as a message from the Google Allo app itself, no need to send a text!

Now with both major competitors garnering themselves over a billion users each, we’ll have to wait and watch if these little extras help Google enter this market in a big way.

The Low Down

As far as the downside goes a lot of people are complaining that you can only use it on phones. This is because the app identifies you based on your phone number, and not your Google account.

Personally, I don’t see why that’s a problem as there isn’t much that you can’t do on a phone nowadays, and I really hate being messaged on my i-pad while I’m playing games.

One place that I do agree they need to step it up, is that they have failed to integrate video calling into the application and you would need to download a different app for this purpose.

This is not helping their case in my opinion, as both competitors have video calling integrated into their apps.

The Privacy Factor

Another interesting downside is that there is no end-to-end encryption, apparently, it’s a sacrifice they had to make to include the Google assistant in Google Allo.

Now I don’t know if trading my privacy in for an artificially intelligent bot, to sit in my messenger and make suggestions is a good trade.

However you can choose an expiration time for your messages, which in a way is a saving grace for those obsessed with privacy and security.
